“Righting the Future: Saving Northern Right Whales”

Join Right Whale Sighting Network Director, Julie Albert, with Blue World Research Institute to learn about the magnificent North Atlantic right whale- the most endangered of all the great whales.

“I've coordinated the Right Whale Sighting Network for 25 years. It's a citizen science program that protects North Atlantic right whales from vessel strikes and close approaches through education and awareness.  I work directly with Port Canaveral, now the world's busiest cruising port, to ensure the whales' safety while they utilize their calving grounds in the southeast U.S. in the winter.  About 75 miles of federally protected coastline in Florida is not monitored by aerial surveys looking for right whales, so we supplement the sighting information that is utilized to help keep them safe and contribute to the national database at the New England Aquarium.  We train and coordinate coastal citizens to report sightings so that we may help protect the remaining 356 North Atlantic right whales that remain.”

BWRI is dedicated to addressing the global impact of entanglements on marine species through Research, Response/Rescue, Technology and Education.

We also promote the development, improvement, and use of technologies that support marine conservation and education. Our overarching goal is to improve public knowledge and awareness of these endangered and imperiled marine species, their aquatic environments and mitigate the ways that human activities affect them. We are an IRS recognized 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based on the east coast of central Florida, but our work takes us all over the world.
